--CONTEXT: Govt had banned export of non-basmati broken rice in Sept 2022
MUMBAI – The government on Friday has finally allowed exports of non-basmati broken rice with an immediate effect, according to a release by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. The government had banned exports of non-basmati broken rice in September 2022 to control firm prices in the domestic markets.
Informist Thursday reported quoting a senior government official that the decision of allowing exports of non-basmati broken rice was taken at an inter-ministerial meeting that was held on Tuesday. The official told Informist a notification in this regard was likely to be issued in the next two days.
While the exports of non-basmati broken rice were banned in September 2022, the government however, permitted exports to some countries, based on the requests of their governments, to meet their food security needs. The government in October removed export restrictions on shipments of non-basmati white rice amid high stocks in the domestic market. In September, it removed the minimum export price of $950 a tonne on basmati rice shipments.
The decision of lifting the ban on exports comes at a time when rice stocks in the country are abundant. According to the data from the Food Corp. of India, rice stocks at the Centre's pool as of Feb. 1 were at 34.0 million tonnes, massively higher than 21.0 million tonnes a year ago. End
