NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose massive sanctions and tariffs on Russia amid continued attacks on Ukraine. Trump said he is strongly considering large scale banking and other sanctions, and tariffs on Russia until a cease fire and final settlement agreement on peace is reached.

"Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely 'pounding' Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you," Trump said on social media platform X.

According to reports, Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight damaging energy and gas infrastructure.

President Trump's statement comes days after he paused military aid to Ukraine after a heated exchange with his Ukrainian counterpart at White House. On Feb. 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was reportedly asked to leave the White House after an argument at the Oval Office, where Trump criticised him for being sceptical of the value of a temporary cease-fire.

The Russia-Ukraine war began with former's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and escalated into a full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022. The war has resulted in thousands of deaths.  End
