FAO All Rice Price Index falls for sixth month in Feb on weak export values

MUMBAI – The global FAO All Rice Price Index in February fell for the sixth straight month on weak export values in major market segments, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. According to the report, the FAO All Rice Price Index was down 6.8% from January at 105.9 points, which is also 24.7% below the level in the corresponding period last year.

 

Among the four major rice indices, the Indica index was at an average of 111.1 points, down 7.7% from January's level. Indica quotations fell below the two-and-a-half-year lows hit in January, the report said. "Export prices of Indica rice continue to weaken across Asia in February, as fresh demand remained limited," according to the report.

 

In India, the weakness of the rupee against the dollar also pushed prices downwards, according to the report. The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India fell to $373.8 per tonne in February from $411.0 per tonne in January, as per the report. Similarly, the average price of 5% broken non-basmati rice fell to $395.5 per tonne from $425.4 per tonne last month. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India was down at $409.0 per tonne from $437.4 a tonne in January. The price of pusa basmati was also down at $893.8 per tonne in February from $1,000 a tonne a month ago. 

 

The Aromatic rice index fell 5.4% on month to 88.1 points in February and the Japonica rice index averaged 98.1 points, down 3.2% from last month, the report said. However, the Glutinous index averaged 108.9 points in February, nearly 1% higher from the previous month. 

 

The price of Pakistani 5% rice was down at $389.0 per tonne in February from $438.2 per tonne in January, while the price of Thai A1 Super rice fell to $380.3 from $395.0 per tonne the previous month. The price of Thailand's 25% broken rice fell to $424.0 in February from $458.7 a tonne in January. The price of a similar variety of rice from Vietnam fell to $359.3 from $388.8 per tonne, according to the report.  End
