IMD warns of heat wave over Konkan, Goa from Sun, central Maharashtra Tue

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has warned of the likelihood of a heat wave over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam Friday, over Konkan and Goa from Sunday to Tuesday, and over central Maharashtra Tuesday. A heat wave occurs when temperatures reach at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees Celsius in coastal regions, and 30 degrees Celsius in hilly regions.
The department also said hot and humid conditions could prevail over Konkan, Goa, and coastal Karnataka till Saturday, over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam Saturday, over Kerala and Mahe till Sunday, and over Gujarat from Sunday to Tuesday.
The weather agency said isolated to scattered light or moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is seen over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshwadeep, and south interior Karnataka from Monday to Tuesday, with heavy rainfall likely over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal Tuesday.
A fresh western disturbance is likely to bring isolated to scattered to fairly widespread light or moderate rainfall or snowfall over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad from Sunday to Thursday, the department said. Isolated to scattered light or moderate rainfall or snowfall is expected over Himachal Pradesh during the same period, while a wet spell is seen over Punjab Wednesday and Thursday, the weather department said.
Under the influence of a trough, isolated to scattered light or moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is seen over Arunachal Pradesh till Saturday, while a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Nagaland till Saturday, the department said.
A trough is an elongated region of relatively low atmospheric pressure without a closed isobaric contour that would define it as a low pressure area.
In northwest and central India, a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius is seen in the next three or four days, after which no significant change is seen, the weather bureau said.
A gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 3-5 degrees Celsius is likely over east and west India in the next four or five days, the agency said. It sees no significant change in maximum temperatures over the rest of the country. End
