NEW DELHI – Advocating for a stronger ties between the two largest developing countries, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday expressed that the 'boundary question' should never be allowed to define the India-China bilateral relations. "We should never allow bilateral relations to be defined by the boundary question, or let specific differences affect the overall picture of our bilateral ties. As two ancient civilisations, we have enough wisdom and capability to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas pending a fair and reasonable solution," Yi said at a press conference.

The statement came amid China's ongoing tariff war with the US. The US has imposed an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods on Tuesday, adding to a 10% tariff imposed by President Donald Trump on Feb. 4. China has responded with 10-15% tariffs on certain US imports and also raised complaint at the World Trade Organization. The Trump administration has also announced reciprocal tariff on India and other countries from Apr. 2.

Wang Yi said that as important members of the global south, the two countries have the responsibility to take the lead in opposing hegemonism and power politics. "We must not only safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of our countries, but also uphold the basic norms governing international relations. When China and India join hands, the prospects for greater democracy in international relations and a stronger Global South will improve greatly," Yi said.

Giving a terminology of elephant and dragon to India and China, respectively, Yi said, "A cooperative pas de deux (step of two) of the dragon and the elephant is the only right choice for both sides."

The Chinese foreign minister noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping meeting in Kazan last October provided strategic guidance for the improvement and development of the bilateral ties.

He said that China stands ready to work with India to sum up past experience, forge a path forward, and advance the relations between the two countries on the track of sound and stable development. "There is every reason for us to support each other rather than undercut each other, work with each other rather than guard against each other. This is the path that truly serves the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples," he said. End
