IMD issues heat wave warning for Konkan, Goa for Sun, Mon

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a heat wave warning for Konkan and Goa for Sunday and Monday. In the report, the department also said hot and humid weather is likely to over Konkan, Goa, Kerala, Mahe, coastal Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam till Saturday, and over Gujarat on Sunday and Monday.

 

A heat wave occurs when temperatures reach at least 40 degrees Celsius or more in the plains, 37 degrees Celsius or more in coastal regions, and at least 30 degrees Celsius in hilly regions.

 

A cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam is likely to cause strong surface winds with speeds of 25-35 kilometre per hour gusting to 40 km per hour over the plains of northwest India, including Delhi, till the late afternoon hours of Thursday, the weather agency said. 

 

Under the influence of the same weather system, scattered light or moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Nagaland till Friday, IMD said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 km per hour is predicted over Bihar on Saturday, and with thunderstorm and lughtning over Sikkim on Friday and Saturday, the weather bureau said.

 

A fresh western distrubance is likely to bring isolated to scattered light or moderate rainfall or snowfall over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh from Sunday to Tuesday, and over Uttarakhand from Monday to Wednesday, the weather department said. 

 

In northwest India, central India, and Gujarat, a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 3-5 degrees Celcius is seen in the next 4-5 days, the weather department said. No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over east India in the next two days, after which they could rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius. 

 

In Maharashtra, the weather agency does not see any change in maximum temperatures in the next 24 hours, and a gradual rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius thereafter.  End
