Gujarat govt, NextGen ink pact to set up INR 100-bln semiconductor unit

AHMEDABAD - NextGen has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat government to set up a compound semiconductor fab and optoelectronics facility in Gujarat at a cost of INR 100 billion, the state government said in a press release Wednesday. The facility will be set up with technical collaboration from Hitachi group of Japan and Solidlite of Taiwan. The memorandum of understanding was signed at the three-day Gujarat SemiConnect 2025 event that began Wednesday.
The Gujarat government also signed an MoU with Jabil India for setting up a silicon photonics manufacturing unit in the state at an investment of INR 10 billion. This unit would focus on the production of photonics transceivers or data communication devices that are used in artificial intelligence, telecom, internet of things and smart infrastructure. This investment will create around 1,500 new jobs, the release added.
An MoU was also signed with Taiwan Surface Mounting Technology for the establishment of a new electronics manufacturing service unit in Gujarat at an investment of over INR 5 billion. This would create nearly 1,000 new jobs.
Currently, six companies are setting up several semiconductor manufacturing projects at a cost INR 1.25 trillion in Gujarat, and are at various stages of development. These include a semiconductor chip production unit by Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd. and Taiwan's PSMC, which will jointly set up India's first commercial artificial intelligence-enabled semiconductor fabrication facility at an investment of over INR 910 billion in Sanand. Tata Electronics and PSMC also signed a tripartite agreement with Taiwan's fabless semiconductor manufacturer HiMax Technologies to make display semiconductors at the Sanand plant. End
