NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Wednesday approved the development of two ropeway projects in Uttarakhand for a combined cost of INR 68.11 billion.

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the construction of a 12.9-kilometre ropeway project from Sonprayag to Kedarnath at a total cost of INR 40.81 billion, said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology at a press conference Wednesday. The Cabinet also approved the construction of a 12.4-km ropeway project from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib, which will cost INR 27.30 billion.

Both the ropeways will be developed in public-private partnerships. The Kedarnath ropeway, which is estimated to take six years to be constructed, will be developed jointly by Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board and National Highways Logistics Management Ltd., a subsidiary of National Highways Authority of India, Vaishnaw said.

"The ropeway project will be a boon to the pilgrims visiting Kedarnath as it would provide an environment-friendly, comfortable and fast connectivity and reduce travel time in one direction from about 8 to 9 hours to about 36 minutes," the government said in a release.  End
