NEW DELHI – Sugar production in Maharashtra, the country's top producer, has declined 19.8% on year to 7.57 million tonnes as of Sunday compared with 9.44 million tonnes a year ago, according to data from the state sugar commissionerate. Sugar output has fallen in the current sugar season (Oct-Sep) amid an early closure of mills and a decline in sugarcane yields.
As of Sunday, about 82 mills have ended crushing operations for the season in the state compared with 33 mills in the same period a year ago, the data showed. This includes 39 mills in Solapur, 14 in Kolhapur, nine in Pune, eight each in Nanded and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, and four in the Ahilyanagar region, formerly Ahmednagar.
Mills saw early closure this year due to the lower availability of sugarcane and the lower sugar recovery rate. As of Sunday, the average sugar recovery rate in the state fell to 9.36% from 10.03% last year, the data showed.
For the current sugar season ending September, Maharashtra is estimated to produce only 8.3 million tonnes of sugar, against 11.0 million tonnes last year, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. The federation has estimated the overall production in the country at 26.5 million tonnes in the ongoing season, down 17% from 31.9 million tonnes last year. End
