NEW DELHI – Home Minister Amit Shah Saturday chaired a high-level meeting on the security situation in Manipur, according to a government release. Shah directed that the international border fence should be completed at the earliest and free movement should be ensured on Manipur's roads after Mar. 8.
The meeting was attended by the Governor of Manipur and various representatives from the government and armed forces. In February, the Centre had imposed President's rule in violence-hit Manipur, days after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh tendered his resignation to the governor amid the Congress party's threat of a no-confidence motion against the state government.
Shah said the government was committed to ensuring a lasting peace in Manipur, and sought to clamp down on obstructions in free movement and the drug trade. The state has been under turmoil since 2023, after the ethnic violence erupted between the Meitei community and Kuki-Zo tribes in the state. According to reports over 250 people were killed and several thousands were displaced in the violence. End
