RBI says got back 98.18% of INR 2,000 banknotes as of Friday

MUMBAI – The total value of INR 2,000 banknotes in circulation has declined to INR 64.71 billion as of Friday, the Reserve Bank of India said Saturday in a press release. The RBI has received 98.18% of INR 2,000 notes in use as of Friday. 

 

The value of INR 2,000 notes in circulation was INR 3.56 trillion on May 19, 2023, when the RBI announced their withdrawal. The central bank gives periodic updates on the status of withdrawal of the notes. The facility to deposit or exchange the rupee notes at all bank branches was available till Oct. 7, 2023. Currently, the facility is only open at the RBI's 19 issue offices. The INR 2,000 notes continue to be a legal tender, the RBI said in the release.  End
