MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s wholesale sales growth slumped to a six-month low in February, dragged down by a contraction in passenger car despatches, according to an exchange filing on Saturday. The company's exports snapped an eight-month growth streak as it contracted in double-digits in February.
Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, sold 199,400 units to dealers in February, up barely a percent compared with a year ago. In Apr-Feb, the company despatched 2.04 million units, nearly 5% higher on year.
Weakness continued to be acute in the small car segment as despatches of mini cars by Maruti Suzuki in February fell to 10,226 units, down nearly 31%. The Alto and S-Presso line-up saw the sharpest contraction since June, a telling sign of dwindling demand for smaller automobile variants. Despatches of compact cars in February rose to 72,942 units, 1.8% higher on year. Models in this range include Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR.
Maruti Suzuki's mid-size range, which includes just its sedan Ciaz, saw despatches go up nearly 130% on year to 1,097 units. This is the highest number of Ciaz models the company has sold since September 2023. As per multiple news reports this week, Maruti Suzuki will discontinue this sedan. However, Informist could not verify this independently. Combined sales of Maruti Suzuki's mini and compact segment, along with the mid-size model, stand at 84,265 units, 3% lower on year.
Apart from Ciaz, utility vehicles and compact cars were the only segment in Maruti Suzuki's line-up that grew year on year in February. The company sold 65,033 utility vehicles in February, 6.2% higher on year. Models in this range include Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6. Despatches of Maruti Suzuki's Eeco van fell 5.4% on year to 11,493 units.
Overall, passenger vehicle wholesalae sales by Maruti Suzuki in India stood at 160,791 units, largely unchanged from last February. This is the weakest growth rate since October.
The despatches of Maruti Suzuki's Super Carry, a light commercial vehicle, contracted 13% on year in February to 2,710 units. Including this segment, Maruti Suzuki's domestic sales for February stood at 163,501 units, unchanged on year. Sales to other original equipment manufacturers by Maruti Suzuki more than doubled year-on-year to 10,878 units in February.
Overall sales including passenger vehicle wholesale despatches, light commercial vehicles, and sales to other original equipment manufacturers add up to 174,379 units, 3.5% higher on year.
Exports by Maruti Suzuki in February fell to 25,021 units, registering a contraction of 13.5% on year and 7.7% from January. In absolute terms, Maruti Suzuki's exports declined to a seven-month low.
For Oct-Dec, Maruti Suzuki's net profit was INR 35.25 billion on revenues of INR 384.92 billion. Friday, its shares ended 3.5% lower on the National Stock Exchange, at INR 11,945.85. End
