NEW DELHI – The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories has projected India's sugar production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) at 26.5 million tonnes, lower than the previous estimate of 27.0 million tonnes. Last year, the sugar output was 31.9 million tonnes.
The federation has cut its estimate for sugar production in the current season as most mills had shut their operation earlier due to a decline in cane yields. As of Friday, 86 mills had closed across India, against 72 units last year, it added. Of the total 533 units that operated this season, only 347 mills are still crushing cane as of Friday, the federation said.
Amid lower cane yields, the average sugar recovery rate fell to 9.2% as of Friday, compared with 9.9% in the corresponding period last year, the federation data showed. In line with the federation, The All India Sugar Trade Association has also pegged sugar output at 26.5 million tonnes, according to the trade body's release in January.
While the Indian sugar industry has cut its production estimates, the International Sugar Organization has forecast the global sugar deficit at a nine-year high of 4.88 million tonnes in 2024-25. In November, the international body had projected a deficit of 2.51 million tonnes for the current sugar year ending September. "A global deficit of this magnitude has not been seen for nine years," it said on Thursday.
For the sugar year ending September, the federation has projected a steep fall in Maharashtra's sugar production. Maharashtra is estimated to produce only 8.3 million tonnes sugar in 2024-25, against 11.0 million tonnes last year. Uttar Pradesh is pegged to produce 9.2 million tonnes, down from 10.4 million tonnes last year. Karnataka is estimated to make 4.1 million tonnes, against 5.3 million tonnes last year.
As of Friday, India had produced 21.9 million tonnes sugar, 14% down on year from 25.5 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year. Mills in Maharashtra made 7.5 million tonnes of sugar, down from 9.1 million tonnes. In Uttar Pradesh, sugar production stands at 7.2 million tonnes, down from 7.9 million tonnes last year. Sugar production in Karnataka has reached 3.8 million tonnes, against 4.6 million tonnes last year. End
