NEW DELHI – India and the European Union will spend 60 million euros (around INR 5.45 billion) for a joint research on recycling of batteries used in electric vehicles, marine plastic litter, and waste-to-hydrogen, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday. The aim is to enhance the dialogue on clean and green energy and achieve net zero emissions for India and the EU by 2070 and 2050, respectively, the ministry said after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

"On clean and green energy, there is joint funding being announced of 60 million euros for research projects ranging from electric vehicles to marine plastics, and also to projects on waste to energy, especially to green hydrogen. There has been progress on the third phase of the work plan on clean energy and climate partnership that India and EU share," External Affairs Minister Secretary West Tanmaya Lal said.

On recycling of batteries for electric vehicles, the ministry said, the focus will be on battery circularity through different kinds of flexible/low cost/easy to recycle batteries. "In marine plastic litter, the focus will be on developing technologies for detection, measurement and analysis of aquatic litter and for mitigation of the cumulative impact of pollution on the marine environment. On waste-to-hydrogen, the focus will be on developing technologies with greater efficiency to produce hydrogen from biogenic wastes," the ministry said.

The European Commission president, accompanied by the EU College of Commissioners, was on a two-day visit to New Delhi. The ministry emphasised that the visit signals the high priority that is attached by both sides to the strategic partnership. In addition to talks between PM Modi and von der Leyen, there have been 20 individual ministerial meetings. The ministry also released a joint statement on the outcome of the visit.

On the free trade agreements between India and the EU, both the sides tasked their respective teams to conclude FTA talks by the end of this year, recognising the centrality and importance of growing India - EU trade and economic relations. "The leaders asked the officials to work as trusted partners to enhance market access and remove trade barriers. They also tasked them to advance negotiations on an Agreement on Investment Protection and an Agreement on Geographical Indications," the joint statement reads.

In 2007, India and the EU had launched negotiations for a broad-based trade and investment agreement, but the discussions were suspended in 2014 following differences over market access. The negotiations for a trade agreement resumed in June 2023 after a gap of nine years.

The two regions are set to hold the next round of talks for the trade deal in March at Brussels. The previous round of negotiations were held in September.  End
