HYDERABAD – Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu Friday said the ministry has approved revival of the Warangal airport project as part of its plan to improve regional connectivity in the country, a press release from the minister's office said. Warangal, the second largest city in Telangana, is around 150 kilometres from Hyderabad.
The Airports Authority of India will undertake development of the Warangal airport. The Telangana government, which is pushing for the development of Warangal airport, has earmarked INR 2.05 billion in financial support and 280 acres of land. The proposed airport will be able to handle large aircraft like Airbus 320 and Boeing 737.
Due to an exclusivity clause in the development agreement of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, which was developed by GMR Hyderabad International Ltd., development plans for Warangal airport did not see the light. As per the Hyderabad airport concession agreement, no airport is allowed within 150 kilometre radius, unless GMR accepts it. The clause was to protect financial interests of GMR Hyderabad International, a subsidiary of GMR Airports Ltd.
As demand for Warangal airport intensified, Aviation Minister Naidu held discussions with the management of GMR Hyderabad Airport and secured no-objection certificate, which cleared the way for development of the airport. The no-objection certificate from GMR is applicable only to Warangal airport, the release said. Airports Authority of India will start infrastructure planning after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals, the release said.
On Friday, shares of GMR Airports closed at INR 69.47 on the National Stock Exchange, up 0.3% from the previous close. End
