MUMBAI – A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said in a release. This is likely to cause isolated to scattered light rainfall or snowfall over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next week, starting Sunday. Light to moderate rainfall is also likely over parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh Monday.

Currently, a western disturbance lies as a trough in the lower to upper tropospheric levels and an induced low pressure area over west Rajasthan and adjoining parts of Pakistan with associated cyclonic circulation. Under the influence of these, isolated hailstorm activity is likely over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and west Uttar Pradesh Friday.

Under the influence of these weather systems, isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall is very likely over Punjab Friday, while isolated hailstorm activity is likely over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and west Uttar Pradesh. Heavy to very heavy rainfall or snowfall is likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Ladakh.

Moving to southern India, heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till Saturday, and Kerala and Mahe Saturday, the weather bureau said. Scattered to fairly widespread light or moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are very likely over Kerala and Mahe Friday.

Meanwhile, the weather bureau said heat wave conditions are likely over parts of coastal Karnataka Friday. Hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail over the Konkan and Goa Friday.

The agency expects a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius over central India during the next 3-4 days and a gradual rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius over east India during the next two days. A gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius is likely over Gujarat during the next two days, with no significant change thereafter.  End
