MUMBAI – Mills across the country have produced 21.98 million tonnes of sugar as of Friday in the current season ending September, The Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association said in a release. As of Friday, 355 mills are running across the country, it added.

Sugar production in Maharashtra was at 7.48 million tonnes so far, while in Uttar Pradesh production was at 7.29 million tonnes, the association said. Mills in Karnataka produced 3.82 million tonnes sugar, while those in Tamil Nadu produced 290,000 tonnes, and mills in Gujarat produced 682,000 tonnes of sweetener as on Friday in the current season, ISMA said.

Sucrose percentage in plant cane across the state of Uttar Pradesh is improving and has reached a level comparable to the same period last season. As a result, it is expected to partially offset the lower sugar recovery experienced during the first half of the season, by the end of this season, it said. Crop diseases such as red rot and heavy rains in some districts had impacted sugarcane yield and recovery rates.

In Maharashtra and Karnataka, closure rate of factories has increased in the last fortnight and around 141 factories are reportedly closed in these states. Some factories in south Karnataka are expected to restart operations during the special season from Jun-Sept 2025. Usually, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu collectively contribute around 400,000–500,000 tonnes in the special season, the sugar body said.

In Uttar Pradesh, 108 factories are currently operating, of the 122 that were crushing since the start of the season, and in Maharshtra 114 mills out of 200 factories are crushing as on Friday. In Karnataka 23 factories out of 78 are still operational, the association said.

As per ethanol supplies as of Jan. 31, mills have diverted about 1.4 million tonnes of sucrose for making ethanol, against 830,000 tonnes in the same period a year ago. For the entire ethanol supplying year ending October, ISMA has estimated that about 3.75 million tonnes of sugar will be diverted for ethanol making, against 2.15 million tonnes last year.  End
