MUMBAI – Indian airlines carried 14.61 million domestic passengers in January, up 11.3% from 13.13 million passengers in the same month last year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said in a report Thursday. The market share of Tata Group-owned Air India was 25.7% in January. The market share of IndiGo was 65.2% in January against 64.4% in December. SpiceJet's market share fell marginally to 3.2% in January. Akasa Air's market share rose slightly to 4.7% in January.

 

In January, Alliance Air, Air India group, Indigo, SpiceJet, Fly91, and Indiaone Air saw a decrease in passenger load factor from the previous month. Only Akasa Air, Fly Big, and Star Air saw a rise in the passenger load factor for the month. Passenger load factor, which measures an airline's efficiency in filling its seats to generate revenue, was the highest for Akasa Air at 93.7% in January, followed by IndiGo at 89.8%.

 

Air India's passenger load factor for January fell slightly to 84.4% from 84.7% in December. SpiceJet's passenger load factor fell 30 basis points to 87.1% in January. Passenger load factor of Alliance Air fell to 77.6% in January from 77.7% the previous month. Indiaone Air's passenger load factor fell 630 basis points from the previous month to 80.9% in January. Fly91's passenger load factor fell slightly to 82% in January from 82.7% in the previous month. Star Air's passenger load factor increased to 79.6% in January from 78.3% in December.

 

Across the six metros, IndiGo reported the best on-time performance of 75.5% in January, followed by Akasa Air at 71.5%. The flight cancellation rate for domestic airlines in January was 1.62% against 1.07% in the previous month, the DGCA report showed. Among the airlines, FlyBig reported the highest cancellation rate of 17.74%, followed by Fly91 at 5.09%. Air India reported the lowest cancellation rate of 0.45%.

 

A total of 973 passenger complaints were received by domestic airlines in January, the regulator said. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried in January was about 0.67. Flight problems, the major reason for passenger complaints, accounted for 37.8% of the total passenger complaints.

 

On Thursday, shares of IndiGo parent Interglobe Aviation Ltd. closed at INR 4,443.40 on the National Stock Exchange, up 0.4%. On the BSE, shares of SpiceJet closed at INR 44.72, down 6.8%.  End
