Global Jan alumina output down 0.2% on month at 12.83 mln tn, says institute

MUMBAI – Global alumina production fell 0.2% on month to 12.83 million tonnes in January, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. However, alumina output was up 6.3% from 12.07 million tonnes in January 2024.
The average daily global alumina production fell to 413,900 tonnes in January from the revised 414,600 tonnes in December, the data showed. Alumina production in China was at 7.55 million tonnes in January, unchanged on month. The country's output, which accounted for over 58% of global alumina production, was up nearly 12% from a year ago, the data showed.
In the Oceania region, alumina output rose marginally to 1.54 million tonnes in January from 1.53 million tonnes in December. In Africa and Asia excluding China, alumina production rose to 1.26 million tonnes last month from 1.24 million tonnes in December. In Europe, production fell 11,000 tonnes to 630,000 tonnes in January and output in South America fell 5.4% on month to 1 million tonnes, the data showed.
According to the data, global primary aluminium production declined marginally to 6.252 million tonnes in January from 6.254 million tonnes a month ago. At 2019 IST, the most-active March aluminium contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India was up 0.3% at INR 258.90 per kg. On the London Metal Exchange, the three-month aluminium contract was up 0.4% at $2,644 per tonne. End
