NEW DELHI – India is working on bringing out the tailings policy that will help "recover critical minerals from secondary sources such as waste dumpings, rejects, overburden, tailings", in the next 90 days, Union Minister for Mines G. Kishan Reddy said Thursday.

"Under this, those mining will be asked to conduct a test on their dumpings to check for the presence of any critical minerals. An action plan in this regard will be ready in the next 90 days," he said addressing the media at a conference.

Tailings are a waste product made up of ground rock, water, and other materials. They are a by-product of the process of extracting metals and minerals from ore and may include minerals like titanium, sulphur, potassium, gold, zinc, copper, quartz among others.

This comes as a part of India's announcement during the Budget to launch a policy to recover critical minerals from mining by-products to improve availability of the crucial feedstock for next-generation manufacturing.

Some critical minerals like Gallium, Tellurium or Selenium are found in the tailings of minerals mined but are lost as rejects. To recover such critical elements, effective tailings management including greater investment in research and development to establish best recovery processes is the need of the hour, a statement by the ministry of mines read.  End
