MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a heat wave warning for Konkan and Goa for Thursday and coastal Karnataka till Friday. In a report, the department also said hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over Konkan and Goa till Friday and coastal Karnataka till Saturday.

A heat wave occurs when temperatures reach at least 40 degrees Celsius or more in the plains, 37 degrees Celsius or more in coastal regions, and at least 30 degrees Celsius in hilly regions.

On Wednesday, Kannur airport recorded the highest maximum temperature for the day in the plains of 39.2 degrees Celsius, the weather department said. Temperatures were above normal by 1-3 degrees Celsius at many places in Uttarakhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, west Madhya Pradesh, central Maharashtra, Kerala, and Mahe.

The weather bureau also said heavy rainfall or snowfall is likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh till Friday. Very heavy rainfall or snowfall is likely over these places Thursday. These weather conditions are due to a western disturbance in the lower to upper tropospheric levels.

The weather bureau also said isolated hailstorms are likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana till Friday. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Punjab till Friday, it said.

Moving to the northeast India, the meteorological department said heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh till Saturday. Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is "very likely" over Arunachal Pradesh over the weekend. Similar weather conditions are also seen over West Bengal and Sikkim over the weekend.

The weather bureau expects a gradual fall in maximum temperatures by 3-5 degrees Celsius over northwest India during the next two days and a gradual rise by 4-6 degrees Celsius thereafter. No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over Konkan and Goa during the next 24 hours, after which temperatures are expected to see a gradual fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius.  End
