MUMBAI – The Centre has released the second reallocation of the export quota for the 2024-25 sugar season, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a notification. Consequent adjustment to the domestic monthly release quota for availability of export has been made, it said.

On Jan. 20, the government had lifted the ban on sugar exports and set the export quota for 2024-25 at 1 million tonnes.

Requests, along with agreements between sugar mills involved in the exchange of export quantity, and domestic monthly release quantity have been examined and additional export quantity and the revised domestic quota for the mills have been allocated, the notification said.

Mills adjacent to ports in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka will opt for exporting sugar due to lower logistics costs, while mills in states such as Uttar Pradesh will trade their export quota to these states in exchange for a higher domestic sales quota, Informist had quoted The Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association Director General Deepak Ballani as saying earlier.  End
