NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet in a meeting held on Feb. 19 has approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 based on recommendations of the joint parliamentary committee, which had tabled its report in Parliament earlier this month, a source said. The bill was referred to the committee, headed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jagdambika Pal in August, after its introduction in the Lok Sabha.
The Cabinet approval has paved the way for the government to introduce the revised Bill in Parliament. Sources said the Bill may be introduced during the second phase of the Budget session, set to commence on Mar. 10 and conclude Apr. 4.
On Feb. 13, the joint parliamentary committee had tabled its report on the Waqf Amendment Bill in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha amid protests by Opposition party members. The opposition parties, including Congress, the Samajwadi Party, the Trinamool Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, objected to the removal of their dissent notes from the report.
On Jan. 29, the committee adopted the report on the bill with a majority vote after adopting 14 proposals suggested by members from the National Democratic Alliance alone.
Waqf is a charitable or religious donation made by Muslims for the benefit of the community. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill aims to amend the law that governs these properties, which include mosques and madrassas. The government had said that the bill seeks to amend the Waqf Act for "effective management" of assets and administration of Waqf properties. End
