India Jan crude steel output up 6.8% on year, says World Steel Association

MUMBAI – Production of crude steel in India rose 6.8% on year to 13.6 million tonnes in January, according to data from the World Steel Association. During the month, the country accounted for nearly 9% of total global steel output.
Globally, crude steel output fell 4.4% on year to 151.4 million tonnes last month because of a drop in output in Brazil, China, Germany, Iran, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and Turkey. India and the US were the only ones of the top 10 steel-producing countries to report growth in production in January.
China, the world's largest producer, reported a decline in crude steel output by 5.6% on year to 81.9 million tonnes last month. China's production of crude steel accounted for over 54% of global output in January.
In Japan, crude steel output fell 6.6% to 6.8 million tonnes, and production in South Korea dropped 8.8% to 5.2 million tonnes.
The US produced 6.6 million tonnes of steel in January, up 1.2% on year, while output in Turkiye fell 1.4% to 3.2 million tonnes. Steel production in Germany declined 8.8% to 2.8 million tonnes in January.
Crude steel production in Russia is estimated to have eased by 0.6% to 6.0 million tonnes. Overall production in Brazil was down 4.5% to 2.6 million tonnes. Output in Iran plummeted 24.1% to 2.2 million tonnes. End
