NEW DELHI – The Centre has set the domestic sugar sales quota for March at 2.30 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X Tuesday. The quota for the upcoming month is 2.2% tonnes higher than last month, but down 2.1% on year from 2.35 million tonnes last March.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. The government sets monthly sales quotas for each sugar mill. A lower quota restricts mills from selling the sugar they have produced.
Market players were anticipating the March sales quota to be 2.35 million tonnes-2.40 million tonnes amid upcoming festivals such as Holi and with the onset of summer in several parts of the country.
Sugar production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep) is estimated to fall 17% on year to 26.5 million tonnes, from 31.9 million tonnes last year, according to the All India Sugar Trade Association. Sugar output is projected to fall due to a decline in sugarcane yields in major producers--Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. End
