MUMBAI – An anti-cyclonic circulation over north Bay of Bengal is likely to cause a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning with squalls of speeds 40-60 kilometre per hour over Odisha during the weekend, the India Meteorological Department said. A squall is a sudden increase of wind speed of at least 29 km per hour with the speed rising to 40 km per hour or more and lasting for at least one minute. An anti-cyclonic circulation occures when the wind flow is clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counter clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is predicted over Uttarakhand during the same period as well, the department said.

Additionally, heavy rainfall or snowfall is seen over parts of Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradeshand, and Uttarakhand, while isolated light to moderate rainfall is likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, and west Rajasthan from Tuesday to Thursday, the weather agency said.

Under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over Nagaland, a wet spell is likely over northeast India, the sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next seven days, the agency said. Thunderstorm and lightning are predicted over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya till Sunday, with gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 km per hour seen over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Saturday, IMD said. Heavy rainfall or snowfall is also likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh Friday.

A gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius is likely over northwest India in the next three days and no significant change is likely thereafter, the weather bureau said. No significant change in minimum temperatures is seen over the rest of the country in the next 4-5 days.

A gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius is likely over northwest India in the next four days, and thereafter no significant change is seen, IMD said. No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over Gujarat during the next three days, after which a gradual rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius is seen during the subsequent two days.
