--MoSPI: All-India unemployment rate 6.4% Oct-Dec, unchanged from Jul-Sept

--CONTEXT: MoSPI releases Periodic Labour Force Survey for Oct-Dec

NEW DELHI – India's urban unemployment rate was unchanged in Oct-Dec at a record low of 6.4%, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's latest Periodic Labour Force Survey released Tuesday showed. The headline figure masked a sizeable 30-basis-point fall in the urban female unemployment rate to 8.1%, as the unemployment rate for urban males edged up by 10 bps to 5.8%.

However, the male Labour Force Participation Rate rose to 75.4% in Oct-Dec from 75.0% in the preceding quarter. On the other hand, the Labour Force Participation Rate for females declined to 25.2% from 25.5%, resulting in the headline number staying at 50.4%.

The survey, published on a quarterly basis for urban data, measures the unemployment rate in terms of Current Weekly Status. As per this definition, a person is considered employed if he or she has worked for at least one hour on any day during the seven days preceding the day the person is surveyed.

In some good news, the proportion of females employed in regular salaried jobs increased to 54.8% in Oct-Dec, a full percentage point higher than the figure for Jul-Sept. At the same time, the proportion of salaried males declined slightly to 47.7% from 47.9% in Jul-Sept.

The Periodic Labour Force Survey is the only official measure of employment in the country. It is currently carried out on a quarterly basis in urban areas and annually in rural areas. The statistics ministry is expected to soon start collecting and publishing the data on a monthly basis.  End
