NEW DELHI – India's merchandise trade deficit widened to $23.00 billion in January from $21.94 billion in December as imports continued to outpace exports, data released by the commerce ministry on Monday showed. The trade deficit was $16.55 billion in January last year.
Merchandise exports fell 2.4% on year to $36.43 billion in January, while imports rose 10.3% to $59.42 billion. In December, goods exports had fallen 1.0% on year to $38.01 billion and imports had risen 4.9% on year to $59.95 billion.
India's merchandise trade deficit in Apr-Jan rose 17.8% on year to $242.99 billion from a year ago. Exports in Apr-Jan rose 1.4% on year to $358.91 billion, while imports increased 7.4% to $601.90 billion.
The overall imports went up in January, even as crude oil imports fell 13.5% on year to $13.43 billion. Oil imports in Apr-Jan were up 6.4% on year at $154.84 billion. The bulk of India's oil imports came from Russia, with data showing that the merchandise imports from Russia were worth $54.45 billion in Apr-Jan, as against $50.81 billion a year ago. More than 88% of India's domestic demand for crude oil is met through imports.
The non-oil imports in January rose to $45.99 billion from $38.35 billion a year ago. In the first ten months of 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India's non-oil imports were $447.06 billion, up 7.8%.
On the other hand, India's export of petroleum products fell sharply in January to $3.56 billion from $8.61 billion a year ago. Petroleum exports in Apr-Jan declined 24.8% on-year, at $53.07 billion.
Non-petroleum exports climbed 14.5% to $32.86 billion in January. In Apr-Jan, India's non-petroleum exports were $305.84 billion.
Gold imports rose to $2.69 billion in January from $1.91 billion a year ago. In the first ten months of FY25, gold imports were up 32.1% on year at $50.00 bln. However, India's gems and jewellery exports were down 9.3% on-year to $24.38 billion in Apr-Jan.
Engineering goods exports, the largest item in India's exports basket, rose 9.8% on year to $96.75 billion in Apr-Jan. In January, engineering goods exports were $9.42 billion, as against $8.77 billion a year ago. Electronic goods exports jumped 33.7% on year to $30.22 billion in Apr-Jan, while their imports increased 11.4% on year to $81.71 billion.
