NEW DELHI – Mills across the country have produced 19.7 million tonnes of sugar as of Saturday in the current season ending September, down 12% on year from 22.4 million tonnes in the same period a year ago, The Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association said in a release Monday. As of Saturday, 460 mills are running across the country, against 504 mills a year ago, it added.

About 58 mills in Maharashtra and Karnataka have closed so far, against 22 last year, ISMA said. "It is worth noting that some factories in south Karnataka are expected to restart operations during the special season from June or July to September 2025," it added.

Amid early mill closures and lower sugarcane yield, sugar output for the entire season ending September is likely to fall 14.4% on year to 27.3 million tonnes from 31.9 million tonnes last year, according to ISMA.

As of Saturday, output from top sugar producer Maharashtra was 6.8 million tonnes, down nearly 14% from 7.9 million tonnes a year ago. About 170 mills are in operation in the state against 203 last year, the data showed.

Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh fell 6% on year to 6.4 million tonnes from 6.8 million tonnes last year. Improving sugar production in the state "is expected to partially offset the lower sugar recovery experienced during the first half of the season, by the end of this season," ISMA said. Crop diseases such as red rot and heavy rains in some districts had impacted sugarcane yield and recovery rates. The state had 119 mills in operation, the same as last year, the data showed.

As per ethanol supplies as of Jan. 31, mills have diverted about 1.4 million tonnes of sucrose for making ethanol, against 830,000 tonnes in the same period a year ago. For the entire ethanol supplying year ending October, ISMA has estimated that about 3.75 million tonnes of sugar will be diverted for ethanol making, against 2.15 million tonnes last year. End
