NEW DELHI – Oil marketing companies achieved 19.6% ethanol blending with petrol in January, according to the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell. So far, cumulative blending in the 2024-25 ethanol supply year that began in November has reached 17.4%, the data showed.
To reduce dependence on crude oil, the government has set a target of achieving 18% blending in 2024-25 and 20% in 2025-26. To achieve the 20% blending aim, India needs about 10.16 billion litres of ethanol.
State-owned oil companies bought 917 million litres of ethanol in January, and 2.0 billion litres so far in the ongoing ethanol supply year that started in November, the data showed.
Across the country, about 24,100 retail outlets are dispensing at least one of the alternative fuels--ethanol blended petrol, compressed natural gas, electric vehicle charging facilities, or compressed biogas--to promote green mobility and reduce carbon emissions, the data showed.
In the ongoing ethanol supply year, most ethanol is set to come from grain-based feedstock like rice and maize as they have bagged higher allocation. At the India Energy Week that ended on Friday, the government released a paper on tapping the potential of second-generation ethanol. While first-generation ethanol uses food grains and molasses to make ethanol, second-generation ethanol is made from agri-residues. "Biofuels are mistaken, or often misrepresented, as if it takes food away from people and food is being used for making fuel," Petroleum Secretay Pankaj Jain.
A joint statement on biofuels by international organisations such as International Energy Administration, International Energy Forum, and World Economic Forum was also released at the event. End
