NEW DELHI – Mills in India have produced 19.8 million tonnes of sugar as of Saturday in the current season ending September, down nearly 12% from 22.5 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories.

As of Saturday, 531 mills were running crushing operations across the country, against 533 units a year ago. Amid lower sugarcane availability, around 77 sugar mills have already stopped operations by mid-February. Meanwhile, the average sugar recovery rate – the amount of sugar extracted while crushing cane – fell to 9.1% from 9.9% in the year ago period, the data showed.

As sugarcane yield fell due to unfavorable weather conditions and crop diseases, output for the entire sugar season ending September is pegged to fall 15% on year to 27.0 million tonnes from 31.9 million tonnes last year, according to the federation.

As of Saturday, output from top sugar producer Maharashtra was 6.8 million tonnes, down 14.3% from 8.0 million tonnes a year ago. About 200 sugar mills were operational in the state against 207 in the same time last season. Meanwhile, the average sugar recovery rate fell to 9.2% from 9.9%, the data showed.

Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh fell 7.5% on year to 6.3 million tonnes, as the sugar recovery rate fell to 9.3% from 10.2% last year. Crop diseases such as red rot and heavy rains in some districts have reduced sugarcane yield and recovery rates. The state had 121 mills in operation, against 120 units last year, the data showed.

As of Saturday, Karnataka produced 3.7 million tonnes of sugar, down 13% on year. The average sugar recovery rate in the state fell to 8.5% from 9.8% a year ago, registering the steepest fall among major producers. The state had 79 mills in operation against 74 mills last year, the data showed. Other sugar producing states include Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.  End
