NEW DELHI – The government has slashed customs duty on bourbon whiskey to 50%, and other alcohols to 100% from 150%, the finance ministry said in a notification on Thursday. With this latest cut, India's highest customs duty is 125%, levied on passenger vehicles.
While the government had announced a comprehensive review of its customs duty structure in July, the exercise has gained momentum in light of the latest geopolitical developments. This tariff cut comes just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with the recently-elected US President Donald Trump, who has called India a 'tariff king' in the past.
The US president, without specifically naming any country, had mentioned on Monday that his government would announce a decision this week on reciprocal tariffs. Notably, a month before taking charge as the president, Trump had said that he intended to impose reciprocal tariffs on India. End
