MUMBAI – Demand for automobiles remained tepid in January as domestic wholesale sales grew at a modest 2.5% year-on-year, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Thursday. While domestic despatches remained muted, exports continued to go from strength to strength across segments, the data showed.
Domestic passenger vehicle despatches increased by a paltry 1.6% on year to 399,386 units in January. SIAM said this was the highest-ever sales registered by the segment in January. Utility vehicles continued to shine within the passenger vehicle category in India, as sales to dealers in January rose to 212,995 units, up 6% from a year before. Given the increased demand, companies made more utility vehicles in the first month of 2025. Production of utility vehicles jumped 13.1% on year to 263,971 units. Exports of utility vehicles zoomed nearly 62% on year to 30,457 units.

TWO-WHEELERS
The growth in overall two-wheeler sales to dealers in January was the lowest among the three segments – passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers. Despatches of two-wheelers grew 2.1% to 1.53 million units. The slowdown was driven by a contraction in motorcycle sales even as scooters grew in double digits.
