NEW DELHI - India has political stability and economic strength to work towards its energy transition goals, while also navigating global energy trade, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Tuesday, while inaugurating India Energy Week 2025. "India has resources...strategic geography to attract energy trade."
Notably, the prime minister is on an official visit to France and then the US, where he is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump, with energy and tariffs likely to be key conversation points.
Policymakers have flagged that India's energy transitioning goals should not come at the cost of huge economic implications owing to input cost pressures and other uncertainties attached to it, but the prime minister assured that India's transition goals are placed in such a way that it supports robust growth in the economy.
He said that while India has made progress on exploration of oil and gas in the country's sedimentary basins, much remains to be done. He noted that currently, about 10% of India's sedimentary basins have been explored, a significant increase from 6% in 2014. He explained that through the Open Acreage Licensing Policy rounds, the government is intensifying its exploration efforts but there is "capacity to improve". End
