India Apr-Jan freight traffic at major ports up 3.1% on year

AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India rose 3.1% on year to 698.64 million tonnes in Apr-Jan, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. The rise was led by a 25.6% increase in miscellaneous cargo to 92.02 million tonnes.
Crude and petroleum products cargo, which account for a little less than one-third of total cargo handled at all the major ports across the country, rose 1.8% on year to 206.98 million tonnes.
Container traffic in tonnage terms increased 6.3% on year to 159.69 million tonnes and thermal coal cargo rose 0.2% on year to 106.29 million tonnes for Apr-Jan.
Coking coal volumes fell 10.2% on year at 48.86 million tonnes. The iron ore volumes declined 19.9% on year at 40.13 million tonnes. The finished fertilisers cargo for the 10 months of 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) rose 11.8% on year to 8.03 million tonnes and raw fertilisers were up 13.1% on year at 8.71 million tonnes.
Among the ports, Paradip handled the highest traffic in Apr-Jan at 123.65 million tonnes, followed closely by Deendayal port at 121.82 million tonnes and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 76.29 million tonnes.
