NEW DELHI – The number of e-way bills generated rose 23.1% on year to an all-time high of 118.15 million in January, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network. In December, 112.02 million e-way bills were generated.
At 23.1%, the year-on-year growth in e-way bills generation was the highest since October 2023. Sequentially, e-way bills generated rose 5.5% in January.
An e-way bill is a GST document for transport of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within or outside a state. As such, the number of e-way bills generated is taken as a lead indicator of economic activity and domestic trade.
The increase in e-way bills generally suggests GST collections would be robust the following month, as most transactions are reflected in next month's collections. GST collections rose 12.3% on year to INR 1.96 trillion in January. End
