AAP top brass bites dust in Delhi Assembly polls

NEW DELHI – In a major setback to the Aam Aadmi Party, former chief minister of Delhi and its national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, and former deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia conceded defeat in New Delhi and Janpura seats, respectively. Kejriwal lost the New Delhi seat to Bharatiya Janata Party's Parvesh Sahib Singh by around 4,000 votes. Kejriwal got nearly 26,000 votes while Singh got around 30,000 votes. Kejriwal had held the seat since 2013, when he defeated former chief minister and Congress leader Sheila Dikshit.

 

After conceding defeat, Kejriwal said that his party will play the role of constructive opposition and keep working for the people. "I congratulate the BJP. In last 10 years, we did a lot of work in the areas of education, water. We tried to improve the infrastructure of Delhi. We will play the role of constructive opposition. We will work for the people. I congratulate all the workers of the AAP for the hard work," Kejriwal said.

 

Sisodia lost by around 600 votes to Bharatiya Janata Party's Tarvinder Singh Marwah. Sisodia got around 38,100 votes while Marwah got over 38,800 votes. "Party workers fought well. We all did hard work. People have supported us as well. But, I lost by around 600 votes. I congratulate the candidate who won. I hope he will work for the constituency," Sisodia told the media after conceding defeat.

 

Apart from Kejriwal and Sisodia, former minister of Delhi and AAP leader Satyendar Jain, who is out on bail in a money laundering case, lost Shakur Basti seat by a margin of nearly 21,000 votes. Saurabh Bhardwaj, a minister in the AAP government, lost the Greater Kailash seat to BJP's Sikha Roy. Bhardwaj got 46,406 votes against Roy's 49,594 votes. Former minister of Delhi and AAP leader Somnath Bharti was also trailing the Malviya Nagar seat by a margin of over 2,100 votes. Popular civil services exam tutor Avadh Ojha lost Patparganj, earlier Sisodia's bastion.

 

However, Chief Minister Atishi retained her seat by a thin margin of around 3500 votes, after multiple ups and downs. Senior AAP leader and Delhi minister Gopal Rai won the Babarpur seat by a margin of nearly 20,000 votes.

 

The BJP won 14 seats and was leading on 33 seats, according to the Election Commission of India. The Aam Aadmi Party won 11 seats and was leading on 12 seats, poll panel data showed.

 

The counting of votes for Assembly elections in Delhi started at 0800 IST. The polling for the 70 Assembly seats across Delhi was held in a single phase on Wednesday and the voter turnout was recorded at 60.54%. As many as 699 candidates were in the fray in the national capital.

 

In the 2020 assembly elections, the AAP secured 62 seats, while the BJP won eight. The Congress had failed to open its account.  End
