NEW DELHI – The Bharatiya Janata Party is headed for a comeback in Delhi after 27 years, early trends released by the Election Commission of India showed Saturday. The saffron party has crossed the majority mark of 36 in the trends released for all 70 seats.
The BJP was leading on 43 seats in the initial trends released by the poll panel. The Aam Aadmi Party, led by former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, was leading on 27 seats, according to the poll panel. The trends on India Today channel showed the BJP leading on 46 seats, while the AAP leading on 23 seats.
The counting of votes for Assembly elections in Delhi started at 0800 IST. In the first phase of counting, the Election Commission of India tallied the postal ballots and then the poll panel started counting the votes cast through electronic voting machines.
The polling for 70 Assembly seats across Delhi was held in a single phase on Wednesday and the voter turnout was recorded at 60.54%. As many as 699 candidates are in fray in the national capital. The Election Commission of India established 13,766 polling stations across the city for the electoral exercise. The national capital witnessed a stiff competition among the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Congress.
In the 2020 assembly elections, the AAP secured 62 seats, while the BJP won eight. The Congress had failed to open its account. End
