NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the US on Wednesday and Thursday and will hold a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Friday. This will be Prime Minister Modi's first meeting with Trump after the latter's return as the president of the US. The discussion between the two leaders will cover multiple areas of bilateral relationship such as defense ties, tech and innovation, tariffs and people to people relations, the foreign secretary said.

"At the invitation of US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay an official working visit to the US on Feb. 12 and 13. This will be the first visit of Prime Minister Modi to the US since the inauguration of the second presidential term of US President Donald Trump," the foreign secretary said.

The secretary underlined that the invitation to Prime Minister Modi within barely three weeks of the new administration taking office shows the importance of the Indo-US partnership. It is also reflective of the bipartisan support that this partnership enjoys in the US, the secretary said.

"Trade and investment are going to be priority issues in the discussion... Energy and defence are going to be on the table when the two leaders meet," Misri said. On the question of whether the issue of tariff will also come up, the foreign secretary said that there will be intense discussion on this issue during the meeting.

Before visiting the US, Prime Minister Modi will be on an official visit to France from Monday to Wednesday. The prime minister will co-chair the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit alongside President Emmanuel Macron of France. This is the third such high-level summit held in the very recent past, the ministry said.

"This (France) visit is on the occasion of the organization of the Artificial Intelligence Summit that France is organising and the Prime Minister will co-chair this AI Action Summit alongside President Macron of France...He will attend a dinner on Monday evening that is being hosted by President Macron at the lyse Palace in honour of visiting heads of government and heads of State. The dinner is also likely to be attended by a large number of chief executive officers from the tech domain and a number of other distinguished invitees to the summit," Misri said.

"After the AI summit, there will be a bilateral component to the visit and Prime Minister Modi and President Macron will address the India-France chief executive officers forum. The two leaders will jointly inaugurate the newest Consulate General of India in Marseille. The two leaders will pay a visit to Kadash which is the site of the international thermal nuclear experimental reactor," Misri said.  End
