NEW DELHI – The proceedings of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were marred on Thursday after the Opposition members protested against the "inhumane deportation" of Indians by the US authorities. The opposition members entered the well of the Lok Sabha and raised slogans. The members alleged that the government was not serious about the incident.

On Wednesday, a US military aircraft carrying 104 Indian migrants landed in Amritsar. The deportees, who had all entered the US illegally, were crammed into the aircraft and reportedly shackled and restrained throughout the flight.

As the proceedings commenced, the opposition members raised slogans calling the deportation process inhumane. Both the houses were adjourned till 1200 IST amidst the uproar. At noon, the proceedings in Rajya Sabha got normal after an assurance from Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will make a statement on the issue in the house. However, the chaos continued in the Lok Sabha.

The lower house witnessed multiple adjournments and couldn't conduct the listed business of the day. The Lok Sabha was scheduled to discuss the Budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday.

The members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance also held a protest at the Parliament complex. Some opposition members also shackled themselves as a mark of protest. Opposition members asked the government why it didn't send an aircraft to the US to bring back the Indians.

In Rajya Sabha, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala, referring to Columbia which sent an aircraft to bring back its citizens staying illegally in the US, asked External Affairs Minister Jaishankar why India didn't act like Columbia.

In a statement in both houses, Jaishankar said the government is engaging with the US to ensure that deportees are not mistreated. He also informed Parliament that law enforcement agencies have been instructed to track down the illegal immigration industry and to take necessary action.

The minister's address in Lok Sabha concluded amidst continuing protests from members of the opposition benches.
