Water level in India's key reservoirs 110.204 bcm as of Thu, 61% of capacity

MUMBAI – The water level in 155 key reservoirs in the country fell to 110.204 billion cubic metres as of Thursday from 114.914 billion cubic metres on Jan. 30, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The current level is 61% of the total live storage capacity of 180.852 billion cubic metres. However, the water level as of Thursday was up 23% from a year ago and 19% higher than the normal storage for the period, according to the data. Normal storage is the average storage for the last 10 years.
The total live storage capacity fell in all regions across the country from last week. In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 6.847 billion cubic metres, 35% of the total live storage capacity against 45% a year ago. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
The water level in the western region was 27.420 billion cubic metres or 73% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in the region. During the corresponding period last year, the water level was 61% of the total live storage capacity. Further, none of the 50 reservoirs in the region were at full reservoir level, while three were at 91-99% of the full reservoir level. Two reservoirs in the western region had water below 40% of the storage capacity. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 30.799 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was at 64% of the total live storage capacity compared to 57% in the previous year.
The water level in the southern region was at 32.661 billion cubic metres, 60% of the total live storage capacity of 43 reservoirs in the region, the data showed. The water level in the region during the same period last year was just 33% of the total live storage capacity. In the southern region, two reservoirs were full and three were at 91-99% of the total storage capacity, the data showed. There were six reservoirs in the southern region with water at 40% and below the storage capacity or less.
In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 12.477 billion cubic metres, which was around 60% of the total live storage capacity, slightly higher than 59% in the corresponding period last year.
Of the 155 reservoirs, 141 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 14 reported storage at 80% or lower of the live capacity. Of these 14 reservoirs, six reservoirs have water storage of up to 50% of normal storage.
Since Jan. 1, the country has received 69?low normal rainfall at 6.5 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
