NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday attacked the Congress party for allegedly promoting nepotism, corruption, and appeasement, and also for disrespecting the Constitution. The grand old party hit back, calling the prime minister a liar.

In his over-one-and-a-half-hour speech in the Rajya Sabha on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address, Modi said his government is inspired by the mantra of Sabka Sath Sabka Vishwas. He accused the Congress party of appeasing a small section of society and leaving other people suffering. "It would be a mistake to expect Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas from the Congress party. Congress developed the model of appeasement, corruption and nepotism. For Congress, the family is first," Modi said.

Modi alleged that the Congress party crushed the spirit of the Constitution for the sake of power. "During (Jawaharlal) Nehru ji's tenure as the prime minister, a workers' strike was held in Mumbai. During that strike, the famous poet Majrooh Sultanpuri recited a poem. After that, he was put in jail. Famous actor Balraj Sahni was also jailed only because he participated in a protest demonstration at the time," Modi said.

On this, the Congress party protested in the Rajya Sabha and demanded that the prime minister should authenticate his claims about Nehru. The Congress members raised slogans against Prime Minister Modi and called him a liar.

Modi said that his government is moving forward by respecting and taking inspiration from the makers of the Constitution. "Some people must be thinking about what this UCC (Uniform Civil Code) is. Those who will read about the Constitution debate will get to know the truth," he said.

Modi underlined that the youth of the nation have an important role to play in the making of Viksit Bharat. "We want to strengthen the middle class and the neo-middle class. In this Budget, we have made no tax on income up to INR 1.2 million," he said.

The prime minister said that his government is making efforts to ensure optimum utilisation of all the resources. "We ensured that our schemes have a last mile impact," he said. He also said that the National Democratic Alliance government made policies for the upliftment of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes.
