NEW DELHI – The cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali rose 2% on year in January, while the cost of a non-vegetarian thali rose 17%, CRISIL's Market Intelligence and Analytics division said in a release Thursday. A vegetarian meal cost INR 28.7 in January, while a non-vegetarian meal cost INR 60.6, it said.
The cost of the vegetable thali rose largely due to a 35% rise in potato prices, as well as a 7% rise in prices of pulses. Adding to the cost was a 17% on-year jump in vegetable oil prices on account of a rise in import duties, the report said. However, an 11% drop in fuel cost to INR 803 per 14.2 kg cylinder of liquefied petroleum gas in Delhi from INR 903 last year provided partial relief, according to CRISIL.
On the other hand, the cost of the non-vegetarian thali was driven by an estimated 33% on-year rise in the prices of broiler chicken, which accounts for 50% of the cost of a non-veg thali. The surge in prices, the report said, was due to low base of last year when prices dipped due to excess supply. High feed cost further contributed to the increase in price, it said.
Meanwhile, the cost of a vegetarian thali fell 9% on month, while that of a non-vegetarian thali fell 4%, the CRISIL division said. The fall was led by a 34% on-month fall in tomato prices due to fresh rabi arrivals. Moreover, a 16% and 21% on-month decline in potato and onion prices, respectively, further led to the fall in thali cost, the report said. The cost of a non-vegeterian thali fell at a slower pace owing to an estimated 1% on-month rise in broiler chicken prices, it said.
A vegetarian thali comprises roti, vegetables such as onion, tomato, and potato, rice, dal, curd and salad. A non-vegetarian thali has the same elements except for dal, which is replaced by chicken. The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east, and west India, the report said. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common person's expenditure, it added. End
