Polling begins in Delhi, to end 1800 IST; Kejriwal eyes 4th term

NEW DELHI - Polling across 70 seats in Delhi commenced at 0700 IST amid tight security. A total of 15.6 million voters will cast their votes to determine the fate of 699 candidates in the national capital. Polling will conclude at 1800 IST. The Election Commission of India has established 13,766 polling stations across the city for the electoral exercise. Votes will be counted on Saturday.
The national capital is witnessing a triangular contest between the Aam Aadmi Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Congress party. The high-intensity campaigning for elections concluded on Monday, with star campaigners engaging in roadshows, door-to-door marches, and rallies.
Key constituencies include the New Delhi seat, where former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is contesting from while eyeing a fourth term. Kejriwal will face BJP's Parvesh Verma and Congress' Sandeep Dikshit. In Kalkaji, Chief Minister Atishi will face Congress' Alka Lamba and BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri. AAP's Manish Sisodia is contesting from the Jangpura seat, while Satyendar Jain is facing BJP's Karnail Singh in Shakur Basti. From Patparganj seat, AAP has fielded teacher-turned politician Awadh Ojha against BJP's Ravinder Singh Negi and Congress' Anil Chaudhary.
In the 2020 Assembly elections, the AAP secured 62 seats, while the BJP won only eight. The Congress couldn't win a single seat in the last two assembly elections. End
