NEW DELHI – The high-octane campaigning for the assembly elections in Delhi concluded on Monday with the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress making a final push to win the battle. The elections for the 70-member Delhi Assembly will be held on Wednesday and counting will take place on Saturday.
The day ended with multiple roadshows by the star campaigners of all three political parties. For the AAP, former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal held a roadshow in his constituency, New Delhi, and also campaigned in Kalkaji for Chief Minister Atishi. The AAP, which has been ruling in Delhi consistently since 2015, is seeking another term. Kejriwal said during the roadshow at Kalkaji that the AAP will win at least 55 seats and the tally may go up to 60 seats. The party won 67 and 62 seats in the 2015 and 2020 assembly polls respectively.
The national capital also saw a number of Union ministers and chief ministers campaigning for the BJP on the last day. The saffron party has been out of power in Delhi for around 27 years. Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and Giriraj Singh, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also held roadshows and addressed public gatherings on the last day of the campaigning. The BJP has been attacking the incumbent AAP over its failure in cleaning the Yamuna River and tackling air pollution. The BJP also charged the AAP with corruption. In the last two assembly elections, the BJP did not reach double digits in the assembly. It won three seats in 2015 and eight seats in the 2020 polls.
For the Congress party, Lok Sabha member Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a roadshow in the Kotla Mubarkpur area. Vadra called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kejriwal slaves of big industrialists. The Congress and AAP are part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance but contesting Delhi polls separately. Both the parties had, however, contested the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi and Haryana together. The grand old party, which ruled Delhi for around 15 years, has been struggling to regain its foothold in the national capital. The party couldn't win a single seat in the 2015 and 2020 assembly polls. Its vote share was reduced to a mere 4% in the 2020 assembly polls from around 40% in the 2008 assembly elections. End
