NEW DELHI – The government has raised the sugar sales quota for February for sugar-producing state, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, according to a Department of Food and Public Distribution notification. The all-India quota for the month has already been set at 2.25 million tonnes, unchanged from last month, but down 2.2% on year from 2.30 million tonnes last February.
The sales quota for Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh was raised nearly 0.3% and 0.6% to 821,072 tonnes and 690,255 tonnes, respectively. However, the quota for Karnataka, another major sugar producer, was cut 4.9% to 404,237 tonnes for February. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers.
Mills across the country have 8.5 million tonnes of sugar stock as of Jan. 31, the notification showed. The 2023-24 sugar season closed on Sept. 30 with stocks of 7.8 million tonnes.
The government has deducted the February sales quota for those mills that violated the stock-holding limit and sold excess sugar above their November quota. "The excess quantity of sugar sold during November 2024 is deducted from the release quota of February 2025," the notification said. A lower quota restricts mills from selling the sugar they have produced.
However, those mills that failed to sell as per the November quota have been exempted due to low demand and depressed prices during the month, the notification said.
The following table details the state-wise allocation of sugar sales limits for February, with the month-ago level, and the month-on-month change in percentage:
