NEW DELHI – With an eye on Assembly elections in Bihar later this year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday announced a slew of measures for the state in the Budget for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), including setting up the Makhana Board, greenfield airports, and the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management.
Sitharaman said the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management would provide a strong fillip to food processing activities in the entire eastern region. "This will result in enhanced income for the farmers through value addition to their produce, and skilling, entrepreneurship and employment opportunities for the youth," she said. The decision was taken in line with the government's commitment towards 'Purvodaya'.
According to the finance minister, the Makhana Board will improve production, processing, value addition, and marketing of makhana. The board will provide handholding and training support to makhana farmers and work to ensure that they receive the benefits of all relevant government schemes, she said.
The greenfield airports, the finance minister said, would be facilitated in Bihar to meet the future needs of the state. These airports will be in addition to the expansion of capacity at the Patna airport and a brownfield airport at Bihta, she said.
The Centre will also provide financial support for the Western Koshi Canal ERM Project, benefitting farmers cultivating over 50,000 hectares of land in the Mithilanchal region of Bihar.
The opposition party in the state, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, has termed all the budgetary announcements for Bihar as "deception". RJD Rajya Sabha member Manoj Jha said the government didn't have any blueprint to address the issue of unemployment and migration.
"Merely taking the name of a state multiple times doesn't mean that the problems have been resolved. This is a deception. Does the government have any blueprint to address unemployment and migration, which are the major issues in Bihar? Bihar needs special status and employment. It is our right," Jha said.
Assembly elections in Bihar will be held in Oct-Nov this year. End
