NEW DELHI – The IndiaAI Mission has been allocated INR 20 billion for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), just under a fifth of the total outlay of INR 103.72 billion announced for the mission in March 2024. For FY25, the allocation for the mission was INR 5.52 billion. However, the revised estimate pegged the sum at INR 1.73 billion.
According to Budget documents, the government aims to have 20 AI curation units in central ministries next year as well as 80 IndiaAI labs across the country. The mission will also finance 25 "deep startups" and three industry-led projects, with the hope of resulting in five applied AI projects to "address public sector problem statements".
The jump in the IndiaAI Mission allocation comes days after the Chinese firm DeepSeek's R1 artificial intelligence model sent shockwaves through the world as it claimed its cost was a fraction of what has been spent by US firms such as OpenAI. Thursday, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the country would launch its own "safe and secure indigenous AI model at an affordable cost" with the target that such a model will be ready in six months.
"The AI model is beginning with the computation facility of roughly 10,000 GPUs (Graphics processing unit). Soon the remaining 8,693 GPUs will be added," Vaishnaw had said.
In her Budget speech on Saturday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government would set up a centre of excellence in artificial intelligence for education at a cost of INR 5 billion. End
