NEW DELHI – The government aims to use tourism as a key driver to enhance employment in the country, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Saturday while presenting the Union Budget for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) in the Lok Sabha. The government announced several measures, including organising skill-development programmes for youth, particularly in the Institutes of Hospitality Management.

These programmes will target youth, especially in sectors such as hospitality management, offering them opportunities for certified and specialised skills. To boost tourism related jobs, 50 top tourist destinations across the country will be developed in collaboration with state governments through a challenge mode. The hotels in these destinations will be included in the infrastructure hospitality management list. The land for building infrastructure will be provided by the states.

In addition to these tourism-specific initiatives, several other proposals presented in the Budget aimed at stimulating employment across various sectors of the economy. "To promote employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in labour-intensive sectors, our government will undertake specific policy and facilitation measures," the finance minister said.

The government announced a new scheme in the leather sector which is expected to generate employment for over 2.2 million people and increase turnover and exports significantly. The government also plans to launch the 'Rural Prosperity and Resilience' programme, in partnership with states. "This will address under-employment in agriculture through skilling, investment, technology, and invigorating the rural economy," Sitharamn said. The goal is to create sustainable opportunities in rural areas, where migration to urban centres becomes a choice rather than a necessity, she added.

The government has committed to improving employment opportunities through education and skill development as well. A new National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Management will be established in Bihar to support the food processing industry in the eastern region, which in turn will help farmers increase their incomes through value addition and create more job opportunities for youth through skill-building.  End
