Maruti Suzuki Jan sales highest since May 2020; domestic PV sales up 4%

MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s total sales, including exports, rose 6.5% on year to 212,251 units in January. This is the highest monthly sales the company has recorded since at least May 2020, according to the data available with Informist. The carmaker's domestic passenger vehicle sales for the month were higher by 4%, and exports and sales to original equipment manufacturers rose 13% and 43%, respectively, Maruti Suzuki said in an exchange filing Saturday.

 

The company sold 97,256 passenger cars in India, up 5% on year, of which 96,488 units were from its mini and compact segments. The e Vitara maker's passenger car sales in January were the highest since February 2023. While the compact segment's sales for January rose 7.5% on year to 82,241 units, the mini segment's fell 10% on year to 14,247 units, taking the cumulative growth to 4.4% on year. The company sells Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR under the compact segment and Alto and S-Presso under the mini segment.

 

The company's mid-size segment Ciaz sales more than doubled on year in January to 768 units, Maruti Suzuki said. The company sold 65,093 utility vehicles in the month, marking a 5% on-year increase, and 11,250 vans, a fall of 6.4% on year. Maruti Suzuki sells Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6 in the utility vehicle segment. The company launched the much-awaited e Vitara, based on its already launched 'eVX' concept, for the domestic market at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in January.

 

The company sold 4,089 light commercial vehicles in January, up from 3,412 a year ago, taking the overall domestic sales of passenger and commercial vehicles to 177,688 units, its highest since at least May 2020, according to data available with Informist. The company sold 7,463 units to original equipment manufacturers in India in January, compared to 5,229 units a year ago.

 

Maruti Suzuki's overseas despatches rose to 27,100 units in the month from 23,921 a year ago. Overall, the company has despatched 1.84 million units so far in the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), up 5.2% from the same period in FY24. Of this, the company sold 1.45 million passenger vehicles and 29,391 light commercial vehicles in India during Apr-Jan. For the period, the company exported 274,596 units, up 20% from the year-ago period.

 

The company had earlier informed exchanges that it would increase prices of its cars from Feb. 1 to pass on higher input costs and operational expenses. At 1254 IST, shares of the company were at INR 12,942 on the National Stock Exchange, up 5.1%.  End
